CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas got another solid pitching performance from both its starter and closer on Saturday to beat Southeastern Louisiana 2-1 and take the opening Southland Conference series 2-0 at Bear Stadium.
Sophomore left hander
Noah Cameron followed up
Gavin Stone's Friday night no-hitter with a 10-strikeout, 6-hit, 1-run effort as the Bears improved to 7-7 overall and 2-0 in the SLC. Senior closer
Conner Williams went the final two innings for his league-leading sixth save, striking out three and allowing no hits.
The Bears scored the only two runs they would need in the third inning against SLU starter Grant Upton. Junior right fielder Conner Emmet led off the inning with a double to left field and moved to third on on
Coby Potvin's sacrifice bunt. Senior
Beau Orlando then singled up the middle to score Emmet, and senior
Josh Ragan doubled down the left-field line to bring in Orlando for a 2-0 lead.
That was all Cameron (1-1) would need as he struck out a season-high 10 batters against just one walk. The Lions scored their only run in the top of the sixth inning with a two-out RBI single by Christian Garcia following a leadoff base hit and a hit by pitch. Cameron then got a fly ball to strand the other two Lions.
Williams struck out one batter in the eighth, setting the Lions down in order, then struck out the final two batters of the game for his sixth save in seven appearances, dropping his earned run average to 0.73.
Orlando finished the game 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Ragan went 1 for 4 with an RBI and Emmet was 1 for 4 with a run scored.
In the first two games of the series, UCA pitching staff has recorded 26 strikeouts and just two walks and has a 0.50 ERA.
The series finale is set for 1 p.m. Sunday at Bear Stadium.
