HATTIESBURG, Miss. _ The Southern Miss Golden Eagles got a run in the bottom of the 10th inning to beat the University of Central Arkansas Bears 5-4 in Game 2 of their non-conference series at Pete Taylor Park.
The Bears (3-3), who won the series opener on Friday night, had tied the game in the top of the ninth when junior right fielder
Connor Emmet led off with a base hit to center field and junior second baseman Benny Ayala followed with a double to left. Pinch hitter
Hunter Hicks greeted USM reliever Hunter Stanley with an RBI single to center. Senior center fielder
Josh Ragan then tied the game with his third RBI of the day, coming on a single to left field that scored pinch runner
Kolby Johnson.
UCA senior
Conner Williams came on to pitch the ninth and set the Golden Eagles (5-1) down in order. The Bears also went in order in the top of the 10th before Southern Miss got a one-out base hit by first baseman Will McGillis, who advanced to second on a ground out. Charlie Fisher then came up with a single to right field to score the game-winning run.
Southern Miss took a 1-0 lead in the first and added another single run in the second before UCA tied it in the fifth on Ragan's two-run home run that scored
Cole Fiori, who had started the inning with a single up the middle off USM starter Walker Powell. The Golden Eagles re-took the lead in the bottom of the fifth and pushed it to 4-2 in the eighth before UCA rallied.
Ragan finished 2 for 4 with 3 RBI for the Bears, who had seven hits. USM had 10 hits, led by McGillis, who went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI, and shortstop Dustin Dickerson, who was also 2 for 4. Williams, who had three saves in UCA's first five games, took the loss. UCA starter
