BROUGH, BEARS KNOCK OFF LUMBERJACKS

CONWAY, Ark. _  The University of Central Arkansas Bears got the go-ahead goal from sophomore Sydney Brough in the 70th minute Friday night to down Stephen F. Austin 2-1 in non-conference action at the Bill Stephens Soccer/Track Complex.

The Bears and Lumberjacks, fellow Southland Conference members but playing a pair of non-conference contests this fall, tied 2-2 back on Sept. 20 in Nacogdoches, Texas. Brough, a sophomore midfielder from Oakville, Ontario, scored both of UCA's late goals in that match, both in the final nine minutes of regulation, to force overtime.

This time, Brough and the Bears broke a 1-1 tie midway through the second half after the teams had traded successful penalty kicks less than five minutes apart just after halftime. UCA's Emma Hawkins broke the scoreless drought with a PK at the 46:57 mark, followed by SFA's Katelyn Termini returning the favor at the 51:13 mark. That set the stage for Brough's game-winner with 69:42 on the clock when she converted on a cross from Laurel Landey and a one-touch from Hawkins.

UCA (4-1-1) won its second consecutive game and third in its last four outings. The Bears finished with 14 total shots, including nine on goal. SFA had nine shots and four on goal. Junior goalkeeper Reagan McCombs recorded three saves for the Bears.

UCA honored two of its six seniors on Friday, those who will not compete during the new spring SLC season that was a result of covid-19 issues. Those seniors were Kirsten Rumbold from Highlands Ranch, Colo., and Lauren Hargus from Bentonville, Ark. Rumbold has appeared in 37 matches with four starts at midfield, and she has tallied two assists in her career. Hargus has played in 55 matches, including eight starts, and has collected six goals and two assists.

Coach Jeremy Bishop on the seniors: ""Kirsten has been a leader in our program. Her ability to lead with her actions and words as well as her example off the field has been tremendous. On the field her speed and determination always made a positive impact for our team as an outside back and as a winger.'

"Lauren has been a consistent member of our program. Always giving her best effort in training and in matches. As a forward on the field she has been a threat to score in many ways, from quick turns in the box to getting chances with her head in the air,'

The Bears will play at Little Rock at 6 p.m. Sunday and at Louisiana-Lafayette on Sunday, Oct. 11 before returning home for the final time this fall on Thursday, Oct. 15 against Missouri State.
