BEARS DROP FINALE BUT TAKE HOME I-40 TROPHY

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears dropped Round 3 of the "Governor's I-40 Showdown" by a 5-1 score on Tuesday night  at Dickey-Stephens Park but still took home the trophy commemorating their year-long competition with the Little Rock Trojans.

The Trojans (25-26) out-hit the Bears (27-24) 10-4 and took advantage of three UCA errors to sweep the three-game season series. UCA, however, earned the inaugural traveling trophy with 26.5 of the 43 available points. Governor Asa Hutchison threw out the ceremonial first pitch Tuesday to close this year's series.

Little Rock scored single runs in the third and fourth innings, then added three more in the eighth to seal it. UCA's lone run came in the fourth inning when junior center fielder Josh Ragan led off with a double to left field. After moving to third on Tyler Smith's ground out, he scored on Tanner Wiley's single up the middle to draw the Bears within 2-1.

Ragan finished 2 for 4 for the BearS but the rest of the UCA bats were silent. UCA also had a pair of baserunning errors with a caught stealing and a runner picked off.

UCA starter Logan Gilbertson (1-2) allowed two runs and took the loss in 4.0 innings of work. Little Rock reliever Mason Leeming (1-0) got the victory. Three Trojans had two hits apiece and catcher Ramon Padilla had a pair of runs batted in.

UCA, in a three-way tie for second place in the Southland Conference with a 17-10 record, closes the regular season at Lamar this weekend, beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday. The 2019 Southland Conference Tournament begins next Wednesday at Constellation Field in Sugar Land, Texas.
