BEARS FALL 4-2 TO TROJANS IN ROUND 2

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. _ The Little Rock Trojans got a three-run home run in the fifth inning Tuesday night to down the University of Central Arkansas Bears 4-2 at Gary Hogan Field in Round 2 of the "Governor's I-40 Showdown."

The Bears (17-20) got a solo home run from senior third baseman Tyler Smith in the top of the fourth inning to take a 1-0 lead. Little Rock's three-run blast by Riley Pittman put the Trojans (17-19) ahead for good in the second of three games in the in-state rivalry. UCA closed the gap to 4-2 in the sixth inning when Smith doubled down the left-field line and scored on Marco Navarro's RBI single to right field.

Two base running errors _ a pick off and a caught stealing _ ended that threat for UCA. The Bears put two more runners on base in the seventh inning but stranded both, and put runners on in both the eighth and ninth innings but could not score. For the game, UCA left eight runners on base.

The Trojans added an insurance run in the eighth inning before Donavin Buck recorded the save for the Trojans, striking out two Bears and working around a hit batter in the ninth. Zach Ours (4-0) got the win while UCA reliever Ty Callahan (0-4) took the loss. UCA starter Zach Smith got his first start and went 3 innings, allowing just one hit.

Smith finished 3 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored for the Bears, while freshman first baseman Hunter Hicks went 2 for 4 in his first start of his career. Pittman and Christian Reyes had two hits each for the Trojans, who won their seventh consecutive home game.

The Bears and Trojans will meet again in the series finale on May 14 at Dickey-Stephens Park in North Little Rock.

UCA returns to Southland Conference action on Thursday night at Bear Stadium, hosting first-place Sam Houston State in a three-game conference series, moved up a day for the Easter weekend.
