COOKEVILLE, Tenn. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears rallied from 5-0 and 7-3 deficits to beat Tennessee Tech 9-7 in 10 innings in the second game of Friday's non-conference doubleheader at Bush Stadium. TTU (14-18) won the opener 3-2 with a walk-off home run in the ninth inning.
UCA's Alonzo Bibiano started the late rally in Game 2 by taking advantage of a throwing error to move all the way to third base to lead off the 10th. Joshmar Doran hit a one-out single up the middle to give the Bears the lead. Cole Fiori added a double to left field to put runners at second and third before Nathaniel Sagdahl's sacrifice fly made it a 9-7 UCA lead.
UCA sophomore reliever Gavin Stone got a line out, a swinging strikeout and a pop-up to shortstop to finish it off in the bottom of the inning. Tyler Smith, a senior first baseman, and Doran, a junior shortstop, had three hits each for the Bears, who finished with 11. The Golden Eagles, who led the nation in home runs last season when they reached the NCAA Super Regionals, had four in the game _ two by Kevin Strohschein _ and six on the day.Â
In Game 1, the teams combined for just seven hits in a game that lasted just 2:15. TTU had a pair of home runs, including the game-winner by first baseman Jason Hinchman with two outs in the ninth.
UCA senior starter Cody Davenport (2-3) went the distance, allowing only three hits and just one earned run while striking out seven in 8 2/3 innings. Junior third baseman Beau Orlando had UCA's only RBI with a solo home run in the third inning, his first of the season.Â
The Bears threatened in the top of the ninth when Marco Navarro led off with a double to right center. But TTUÂ reliever Jacob Cole got a pair of strikeouts and a line out to end the threat. Cole went five innings, striking out six and allowing two hits and one run to earn the victory.Â
The series finale has been moved up to 1 p.m. Saturday to avoid possible inclement weather later in the day.
