CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears dropped both games of Saturday's Southland Conference doubleheader at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, both to walk-offs by the Islanders. Friday's series opener also went to the home team in the bottom of the ninth inning.
The Islanders (19-11, 8-4) won Saturday's opener 9-8 in 10 innings and took the nightcap 7-6. UCA, which entered the weekend in third place in the league standings, dropped to 6-6 in SLC play and 12-16 overall.
In Game 1, senior first baseman Tyler Smith had a career day with six RBI, collecting his first home run of the season (seventh of his career) and a pair of doubles. Still, the Bears fell in extra innings as the Islanders got a leadoff double in the 10th and an RBI single for the game winner from Itchy Burts.Â
The Bears were out-hit 18-11 as the Islanders recorded five doubles. Junior center fielder Josh Ragan finished 3 for 5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Smith was 3 for 5 with 6 RBI and 2 run scored, while Kolby Johnson was 2 for 5 and Beau Orlando scored twice after a pair of walks. Senior Conner Williams took the loss in relief, allowing 2 hits and 1 run in 2.0 innings.Â
A&M-CC's top two hitters in the lineup, Enrique Sanchez and Burts, combined to go 6 for 10 with 5 RBI while two others had three hits.
In the late game, with UCA leading 6-5 in the ninth, Thomas Jeffries led off the inning with a double and scored the tying run on Burts' single through the left side. Luke Marbach then drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs for the game winner.Â
Freshman left fielder Bryce Dodd went 3 for 4 with 2 RBI for the Bears, who committed three errors. Ragan and Orlando had two hits apiece for UCA.Â
UCA plays at Oklahoma State at 6:05 p.m. Tuesday in Stillwater, Okla., before returning to Bear Stadium for a weekend SLC series with the McNeese State Cowboys. Game times are 6 p.m. Friday, 4 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
