CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears scored four times in the first inning Tuesday night and rolled to an 8-1 victory over the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions at Bear Stadium.
The Bears (12-13) scored all those first-inning runs with just one hit as UAPB starter Daniel Walsh walked the first three batters of the game and was quickly replaced. UCA then got a run on a wild pitch, an RBI groundout by Beau Orlando, an RBI single up the middle by Tyler Smith and a sacrifice fly by catcher Nathaniel Sagdahl.Â
UCA added single runs in the second and third innings, with a Josh Ragan sacrifice fly and a UAPB throwing error accounting for those. After the Golden Lions picked up their lone run in the top of the seventh, UCA responded in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs. Alonso Bibiano doubled to left field, Christian Brasher followed with a bunt single and Sagdahl doubled to center field to make it 7-1. Brett D'Amico added a sacrifice fly to score Brasher.
UCA starter Mark Moyer (2-1) allowed just one hit in four innings of work. Senior Taylor Anders finished off the final two innings, striking out the first four batters he faced looking and added a fifth in the ninth. UCA's four pitchers _ Ty Callahan for two innings and Zach Smith for one _ allowed just five hits and struck out a combined 11 Golden Lions.
Sagdahl finished 3 for 3 with 2 RBI, including a pair of doubles. Smith went 2 for 5 with an RBI and a run scored. For UAPB, Ryan Mallison went 2 for 4 and scored his team's only run.
UCA returns to Southland Conference play this weekend at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Bears are in third place with a 6-3 record while the Islanders are in a four-way tie for fifth at 5-4. Game times are 6 p.m. Friday, 4 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. Catch all the action on The Bear 91.3 FM.
