BEARS HAND 'JACKS FIRST SLC LOSS WITH 7-0 SHUTOUT

CONWAY, Ark. _ Thanks to the University of Central Arkansas Bears, there are no undefeated baseball teams remaining in the Southland Conference.

The Bears (10-13, 5-3) pounded out 10 hits and scored a combined five runs in the first two innings to shut out the Lumberjacks 7-0 and hand them their first loss while evening their series at Bear Stadium at 1-1. Game 3 is set for 1 p.m. Sunday.

The Bears got another stellar performance on the mound from freshman left hander Noah Cameron, the reigning SLC Pitcher of the Week. Cameron went 7 scoreless innings, striking out 5 and walking 1. Combined with his shutout victory over Nicholls State last weekend, the  St. Joseph, Mo., native has tossed 16 straight scoreless innings.

The UCA bats awoke and provided all the offense Cameron would need in the first inning. Senior second baseman Jay Anderson opened the game with a base hit up the middle against SFA's ace lefty Jaxon Covington, who entered the game 3-0 with a miniscule 1.66 earned-run average. He left after allowing 7 hits and 6 earned runs in 4 innings.

After Anderson was erased on a fielder's choice, junior designated hitter Marco Navarro singled to right center to move Josh Ragan to second. A ground out advanced both runners before senior first baseman Tyler Smith broke out of his slump with a two-run double to left field. Freshman Kolby Johnson followed that with an RBI base hit to right center for a 3-0 UCA lead.

Ragan, a junior outfielder from Irving, Texas, provided the big blow in the second inning with a towering, two-run home run to left field that scored catcher Nathaniel Sagdahl for a 5-0 advantage. With Cameron cruising on the mound, the Bears added a single run in the fourth on Anderson's RBI single, and another in the eighth on junior shortstop Christian Brasher's solo home run, his second of the season.

Ragan went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored, including his team-high third home run. Anderson, Smith and Brasher also had two hits apiece as UCA more than doubled its hit total (4) from Game 1. Cameron and senior reliever Conner Williams of Conway combined to limit the Lumberjacks to just 7 hits with 6 strikeouts and a .212 batting average.

UCA turned two double plays behind Cameron and Williams and threw an SFA runner out at the plate on an attempted double steal to end the second inning. Williams set the Lumberjacks (13-11, 7-1) down in order in the ninth inning, ending the game with a strikeout of SFA pinch hitter Will Cerny.
