ACU BUCKET IN FINAL SECONDS SPOILS SUGAR BEARS' UPSET BID

CONWAY — Abilene Christian scored the go-ahead basket with 2.6 seconds left and Central Arkansas' 3-point attempt at the buzzer just missed as the Sugar Bears fell 67-65 to the Wildcats in the Farris Center on Saturday.

In a tightly-contested game with the two teams separated by a single possession for the final seven minutes, the Wildcats (19-8, 12-4 Southland) made one more play than the Sugar Bears (11-15, 6-10) to escape the Farris Center with the season sweep.

ACU's Madi Miller got the ball on a backdoor cut from Breanna Wright and put in the layup with 2.6 seconds for the go-ahead score. The Sugar Bears then called timeout, advancing the ball to the front court, and got the ball to Kamry Orr for a game-winning attempt at the horn, but it was not to be.

The teams went back-and-forth during the final period, with ACU getting out to a 7-point lead early in the quarter before the Sugar Bears quickly stormed back with three 3-pointers from Antonija Bozic in a span of 1:15 to pull ahead 61-59 with 6:11 to play.

A three-point play from ACU's Lexie Ducat put the Wildcats back ahead with 5:46 to go, but Orr knocked down a pair of free throws less than a minute later to put the Sugar Bears back up by one. Neither team would score over the next 1:20, and Alanie Fisher extended the Sugar Bear lead to three with 3:38 to play.

Unfortunately for the Sugar Bears, that would be their final points of the game as they missed their final five field goal attempts down the stretch. ACU cut the lead to one with 2:47 remaining and eventually tied it on a Dominique Golightly free throw with 1:23 to play – the final score before Miller's game winner.

Orr finished with a game-high 25 points – her 11th 20-point game of the season – and led the Sugar Bears with 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals and a block. Bozic had 13 points, while Fisher added 10 along with 4 rebounds and 3 steals; and Alana Canady added 10 points and 3 rebounds.

Golightly had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Wildcats, while Ducat added 15 and 6. Miller had 6 points in 15 minutes off the bench.

The Sugar Bears forced 22 ACU turnovers and had a 32-11 advantage in points off turnovers, but were outrebounded 40-28 and had 22 free throw attempts to ACU's 30.

Despite the loss, the Sugar Bears remain 8th in the Southland standings and in position to earn their 9th straight Southland tournament berth. With two games remaining, the Sugar Bears are a game ahead of Incarnate Word, McNeese and Northwestern State for the final spot.

The Sugar Bears host Sam Houston State (10-6) on Wednesday before concluding the regular season next Saturday at Northwestern State.
