CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears scored all the runs they would need in the first two innings Tuesday night in a 9-3 victory over the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles in non-conference action at Bear Stadium.
The Bears (9-12) scored three runs in the first and three more in the second against ORU starter Jacob Salim and cruised after that. UCA senior starter Tanner Wiley (1-0) allowed three early runs but settled down to go five innings and strike out five. Junior Mathew Patton earned the four-inning save, allowing just one hit and striking out seven and walking none.
The Bears finished with 10 hits, including a 3-for-4 performance with 3 RBI by junior center fielder Josh Ragan.Â
After ORU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, the Bears responded with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the inning. Jay Anderson had an RBI single to left center and Tyler Smith had an RBI double and Anderson stole home on a double steal with Ragan going to second for a 3-1 lead.
In the second, UCA scored three times with just one hit. Freshman Bryce Dodd, in his first game of the season, was hit by a pitch and then stole second. A fielding error moved him to third and he scored on Marco Navarro's RBI single. Anderson then drew a bases-loaded walk for another run and Ragan added a sacrifice fly to make it 6-3. UCA got two more in the fourth on a Kolby Johnson triple and passed ball and a Ragan double down the left-field line.
The Bears added their final run in the sixth when Ragan doubled down the left-field line again to score Navarro. Navarro finished 2 for 3 with 3 runs scored, while Anderson was 1 for 3 with 2 runs and 2 RBI. Smith finished 2 for 3 with an RBI.
ORU (9-9) used six pitchers, with Salim (0-2) taking the loss. Three Golden Eagles had two hits each to account for six of their seven hits.
UCA returns to Southland Conference play this weekend, hosting first-place Stephen F. Austin at Bear Stadium.
