THREE-POINT BARRAGE SHOOTS DOWN BEARS

THIBODAUX, La. _  A Southland Conference record 22 three-pointers lifted the Nicholls Colonels to an easy 100-57 victory over the University of Central Arkansas Bears on Saturday at Stopher Gymnasium.

The Colonels connected on 22 of 41 shots from beyond the arc to account for 66 of their points. Danny Garrick was 6 of 11, Jeremiah Johnson was 5 of 11 and Kevin Johnson was 4 of 6. UCA went 8 of 28 (28.6 percent) from three-point range in the loss.

Nicholls (12-15, 5-9) made 15 three-pointers in the first meeting with UCA in Conway back in January, a game the Bears won 74-68 by shooting 60 percent from the field in the second half. It was the Colonels' turn Saturday as they scored 56 second-half points and shot 58.6 percent from the field and 63.2 percent from three-point range (12 of 19) in the final 20 minutes.

UCA, which had 17 turnovers, had just one player score in double figures. Senior Tanner Schmit made a pair of three-pointers and finished with 10 points. The Bears made just 17 field goals for the game and shot 29.3 percent. Nicholls ran out to a 44-25 halftime lead on the strength of 10 threes. Johnson finished with a game-high 26 points while Garrick had 20 off the bench.

For the game, the Colonels made 22 three-pointers and just 11 two-point shots. Nicholls broke its own SLC record of 21 three-pointers it shared with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Colonels made 21 against A&M-CC in 2007 and the Islanders made 21 against Southwestern Adventist in 2014.

UCA, which has lost seven consecutive games (two in overtime), hosts Stephen F. Austin at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Farris Center, and Abilene Christian for Senior Day on Saturday afternoon.
