NEW ORLEANS — Central Arkansas was held to 13 first-half points and finished with a season-low 14 field goals as the Sugar Bears fell 65-38 at Tulane on Friday.
The Sugar Bears (1-3) got off to a slow start against the Green Wave (3-2), missing seven straight shots in a scoring drought lasting nearly eight minutes in the first quarter as Tulane got out to a lead as large as 12. The Green Wave then put together a 13-point run in the second quarter to build a 33-13 lead at the break, holding the Sugar Bears to 17.2 percent shooting. After being held to five field goals in the first half, the Sugar Bears nearly doubled that total with nine in the second half – scoring 25 points after just 13 in the first half – but Tulane would counter with 32 points on 12-of-30 shooting (40 percent) in extending its lead to as many as 31.
Freshman
Brionna Budgetts, playing in her second game after debuting with seven minutes at Little Rock last Saturday, led the Sugar Bears in scoring, rebounds and assists with 13, 8 and 2, going 6-for-7 at the free throw line.
Ayanna Trigg added 4 points and 6 rebounds in a team-high 27 minutes.
Taylor Sells had 6 points, and
Savanna Walker added 5 points and 3 rebounds.
Tulane got 13 points and 10 rebounds from Arsula Clark, with Krystal Freeman and Dynah Jones adding 11 points each.
The Sugar Bears were nearly even on the glass with Tulane, getting 11 offensive rebounds to the Green Wave's 10. In all, the Sugar Bears grabbed 37 rebounds against a Tulane squad that allowed 36 to LSU and 38 to Washington.
Up next for the Sugar Bears is a trip to Northern Kentucky, where the Sugar Bears will square off against the Norse for the first time at 10:00am Central on Monday.
