BEARS FALL TO GEORGIA STATE IN SBC SEMI-FINAL

BOONE, N.C _ It was a disappointing afternoon for Central Arkansas men's soccer team as they fell to Georgia State by scoreline of 1-0 in the semi-final round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. The Bears outshot the Panthers 21 shots compared to just five for Georgia State, and managed to strike five on frame.

First Half
  • Georgia State produced the first opportunity of the match in the fifth minute on a strike on frame, but UCA keeper Marc Olsen was equal to the task.
  • Senior midfielder Nate Lancaster would follow up with a strike in the 16th minute that flew just wide of the left post, keeping the Bears off the board.
  • Edoardo Calzola would produce the final opportunity of the first half for the Bears on a left footed strike that flew high over the crossbar.

Second Half
  • The Bears produced the bulk of the chances in the second half, beginning with a Nate Lancaster strike on frame in the 62nd minute that was saved by the GSU keeper.
  • GSU's lone chance of the second half came in the 76th minute and the Panthers took full advantage, scoring a goal and taking a 1-0 lead.
  • The Bears would nearly equalize a minute later on a Calzola strike from inside the penalty area, but again the GSU keeper was equal to the task.
  • Alexsi Morel had arguably the best chance of the night for the Bears in the 80th minute on a left-footed bullet strike, but was denied on an outstanding kicksave from the GSU keeper.

Ross Duncan Quotes
"Tonight was tough. Georgia State is a really strong team, but I felt like we did enough to win. We created some great chances and just couldn't quite find the back of the net. Our guys certainly battled and played like they had in the games leading up to this match, but tonight it wasn't enough."

UCA had an RPI ranking of 26 entering today's match, so despite the loss, the Bears have a great shot of an "at-large" bid for the NCAA Tournament. Selection show is Monday afternoon.
