DURHAM, N.C. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears will check yet another storied venue off their list on Tuesday when they take on the No. 2 Duke Blue Devils at Cameron Indoor Stadium. And this time it will be against the winningest coach in NCAA men's basketball history.
The Bears (1-2), a young team that features four freshmen and just one senior, will have the opportunity to face the five-time national champion Blue Devils at 6 p.m. on the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Network and on The Bear 91.3.
"I think the thing I like about getting a chance to play against Duke is that this will be a lifetime memory for these young men,' said UCA head coach
Russ Pennell. "Regardless of the outcome, you get to play on one of the stories courts in basketbal history, Cameron Indoor, against the all-time winningest coach in college basketball history in Mike Krzyzewski. You have the Cameron Crazies and then there's the fact they've won five national championships.
"You know, not everyone gets that chance to do that, in fact very few do. So the experience is probably the No. 1 thing. And then for the current, you're trying to get your basketball team better against the apex of talent and success in college basketball. So it's a balancing act between the two. You want to enjoy the environment but you also want to play well. So I think that's the challenge and the goal.'
The Bears lost to No. 16 Baylor in the season opener last week in Waco, Texas, then beat NCAA Division II Hendrix College 71-51 at home at the Farris Center. Their last game was their best, an 89-78 loss at Georgetown, another perennial national power, on Saturday in Washington, D.C.
UCA trailed just 54-42 at halftime, and were within 42-39 with 3:33 remaining in the half before allowing a 12-3 run by the Hoyas to close out the half.
Pennell said he is looking for another Georgetown-type effort on Tuesday night against the Blue Devils.
"I just want us to look like ourselves,' said Pennell. "The first 10 minutes at Baylor (last week), I didn't recognize the team. It wasn't us. But at Georgetown the other day, it looked like us again. And as we move forward, we want to see our execution on offense obviously, and then the intensity on the defensive end. But it needs to look like how we practice. And you can only do that by attention to detail and by playing really hard.
"That would be my focal point as we move on through November and December. '
Junior center
Hayden Koval led the Bears with 21 points, 4 rebounds and 3 blocked shots at Georgtown, while sophomore
Eddy Kayouloud added 15 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Redshirt freshman
Jaxson Baker came off the bench with his best game to date, hitting 4 of 9 from three-point range to lead a Bears' perimeter attack that went 12 for 36 from beyond the arc.
"We played awfully well at Georgetown,' said Pennell. "We executed what we wanted to do. I thought defensively we were good. We didn't rebound well and that was the thing that got us. We had a little lull in the last three minutes of the first half that cost us the game.Â
"But I loved the fight. I didn't think we ever gave up. I thought even at halftime, there was more of a disappointment that we weren't playing well instead of a we can't do this. So we saw some really good things in the Georgetown game and now we've got to try to repeat that again against Duke and on into the games after that.'
