CONWAY, AR - It was all smiles this afternoon at the Bill Stephens Complex as Central Arkansas women's soccer team picked up their second straight Southland Conference win against Texas A&M Corpus Christi, defeating the Islanders 1-0 on an
Emma Hawkins goal late in the second half. The Bears win ends a five game win streak for the Islanders as well as places them back into contention for a Southland Conference tournament spot.
First Half
- The 12th minute saw the Bears presented with the first real chance of the match after a penalty kick was awarded. Emma Hawkins, who has scored from the penalty spot already this season, was denied this time by the Islander keeper, who quickly dove down to her left side to keep it out.
- The next opportunity didn't come until late in the second half, this time in favor of the Islanders as they saw a free kick strike rattle the crossbar in the 40th minute. The match would go into halftime all square at zero goals apiece.
Second Half
- UCA keeper Clara Bornet would be called into action in the 55th minute, being forced to make a save on a hard hit strike down the middle.
- Hadley Dickinson would be presented with the next best chance for the Bears after a through ball put her in one on one with the keeper. Dickinson was just unable to keep her strike out of reach however, as the Corpus Christi keeper quickly dove down to make a good save and keep the match level.
- The Bears would continue to apply pressure and finally got their reward in the 86th minute after a Jordan Slim through ball put Emma Hawkins in one on one with the keeper, who this time made no mistake smashing it home with her right foot into the bottom right corner to give the Bears the late winner.
The Bears finished the match with 14 shots, striking six of them on frame.
Clara Bornet was big this afternoon for the Bears, getting three saves and keeping the clean sheet.
Coach Bishop Quotes
"Today we put out a great effort. To be honest, it was the same as a lot of the other games where we've been the better team and we've had the better scoring chances and sometimes we just didn't come away the wins, but this weekend we have. That's just a credit to our girls; continuing to work, continuing to keep fighting and not feel sorry for ourselves because the results haven't gone our way previously."
