Conway - After coming off a 4-0 victory Sunday night against Arkansas Pine Bluff, Central Arkansas (4-2-1) carried the momentum over into tonight's home match from the Bill Stephen's Complex that saw them face Summit League Conference opponent Oral Roberts (4-3-0).
Â
Much like Sunday night, the Bears came out strong early on, earning a corner kick less than two minutes into the game and also forcing a save from ORU keeper Ryleigh Bohnenstiehl in the 11th minute. From there, the Bears would continue to pile on the pressure. UCA forward
Camille Bassett had a header opportunity in the 17th minute that went just wide of Bohnenstiehl's goal and would see another opportunity just two minutes later in the 19th minute, forcing a save from Bohnenstiehl on a strike from just inside the 18 yard area.
Â
The Bears continued to knock on the door as a strike from
Hadley Dickinson forced another Bohnenstiehl save in the 22nd minute. A corner kick from Dickinson in the 27th minute saw maybe the best opportunity of the first half to that point, falling at the feet of
Kristen Ricks, who would fire a shot from four yards out. Again, Bohnenstiehl was up to the task, making another save. However, the save didn't clear the ball out of harm's danger as it would fall to Bassett's feet, who then saw her effort from three yards away ricochet off the post. Bassett would again get another crack at goal, but was impeded by an Oral Roberts defender, earning a penalty kick for the Bears.
Â
Anika Sultan would take the penalty for the Bears, but was unable to give her team the advantage as she saw her penalty fly inches over the crossbar, leaving the score at 0-0. The Bears would continue to dominate in possession and saw their last chance in the first half come from
Bria Williams in the 44th minute as her strike forced another Bohnenstiehl save.
Â
After being held goal-less in the first half, the Bears would see their first goal of the night come less than ten minutes into the second half. The 52nd minute opened the scoring after a cross wasn't completely cleared by Oral Roberts, falling to UCA's
Connie Awuku-Darkoh just inside the penalty area where she was able to tuck the ball into the bottom left corner for her fifth goal of the season.
Â
Not even two minutes after the first goal, Central Arkansas would earn their second goal of the night in the 54th minute. The combination play of
Jordan Slim, Awuku-Darkoh and Bassett was too much for ORU as Slim was able to slip Awuku-Darkoh in on goal who then squared it across to Bassett for an easy tap in finish, giving Bassett her second goal of the season.
Â
Four minutes after the second goal saw Central Arkansas earn their second penalty kick of the night.
Gracie Hair would step up to take the penalty and would bury it into the bottom left corner of Bohnenstiehl's net, giving the Bears a commanding 3-0 lead on the night with still more than 30 minutes to play in the game.
Â
Two late goals would see the Bears cap off a 5-0 night as
Taylor Webb struck in the 88th minute on a belter from 20 yards out on an assist from
Mia Graff. A corner from
Autum Schwartz in the 90th minute would eventually fall to the feet of
Morgan Rollow as she would blast the ball home from three yards out with just 33 seconds remaining in the game.
Â
The Bears earned a second straight shutout, and their fourth this season as they held Oral Roberts to just two shots on goal. Head coach Jeremy Bishop was pleased with his team's performance.
Â
"The girls are doing a great job in working together, but we have to continue to clean up the opportunities to possess the ball," said Bishop.
Â
The Bears play their final non-conference match in Jonesboro, Arkansas as they face the Red Wolves of Arkansas State on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
