Conway --- With a crucial four-game road trip looming, the Central Arkansas Bears took care of business at home with a commanding 6-0 victory over the Incarnate Word Cardinals on Sunday afternoon at the Stephens Complex. The Bears found the net six times, all in the first half, and tied a program Division I record for most goals in one half. Senior
Camille Bassett connected on her seventh goal of the season and is tied with junior
Connie Awuku-Darkoh for most team points with 17. Freshman
Morgan Hurd and junior
Jordan Slim both found their first goals of the year while junior
Bria Williams connected for her third. Sophomore
Hadley Dickinson recorded the first goal of the day and her second of the year. Senior
Kristen Ricks racked up two assists while redshirt-freshman
Kirsten Rumbold collected her first assist.
Â
The Bears finished with 18 shots on the day and 12 on goal while the Cardinals had 14 shots with nine on goal. Head coach Jeremy Bishop was pleased with his team's effort while missing some starters to injuries.
          Â
"We had three starters out today, so to be able to show up and play like we did shows the work our group puts in and the depth that we have," Bishop said. "Our players were in the right spots, had the ball in the right spots and finished plays. We probably had similar opportunities in past games but weren't as efficient in those scoring opportunities as we were today."
Â
The Bears' offense got going quick when Dickinson sent a shot from 17 yards out that went over junior goalkeeper Katrina Buck to the left of the goal to go up 1-0 in the 4
th minute. After three shots from the Cardinals, Bassett converted a beautiful header off a perfect cross from Ricks to put the Bears up 2-0 in the 9
th minute. Dickinson nearly had two goals in the game when her shot went off the post in the 19
th minute, but the ball rolled back to Slim and she finished it in the bottom left corner of goal to advance the Central Arkansas lead to 3-0. To make matters worse for the Cardinals, they gave up an own goal in the 23
rd minute to pad the Bears lead at 4-0.
Â
Central Arkansas refused to let up as just three minutes later, Williams played a ball from Ricks in the middle of the box and finished it in the middle of goal to make it 5-0 in the 26
th minute. Senior
Autum Schwartz nearly joined the action, but could not convert a penalty kick in the 43
rd minute as her shot hit the right post. The miss did not phase the Bears as Hurd headed a cross sent in the box by Rumbold and sent it over the goalie's head in the 44
th minute to give her team a 6-0 first half lead.
Â
Freshman
Reagan McCombs started in goal for the Bears in the second half and kept the shutout intact with five saves. Senior
Lauren Mercuri finished with four saves.
Â
The Bears finished 2-0 in their short home stint and will travel to Nacogdoches, Texas for a matchup with the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks on October 5
th to begin four straight conference games on the road. Â
