SUGAR BEARS BLAST LADY TIGERS

Jonesboro, Ark. – A day after opening play at the A-State Invitational with a 3-1 loss to Arkansas State, the Central Arkansas Sugar Bears rebounded in dominant fashion, hitting .355 and limiting the Jackson State Lady Tigers to a .116 hitting percentage while picking up  a 25-16, 25-11, 25-10 sweep.

The first set was the most competitive of the day, featuring six ties and three lead changes, as Central Arkansas (9-3) built a four point lead three times, only for Jackson State (1-10) to even things up each time. The Sugar Bears would find their form after JSU took a 14-13 lead though, closing the first set on a 12-2 run. Central Arkansas got four kills from senior Kellen Dunn, while sophomore Emily Doss tallied nine digs in the set.

After the teams traded points to open the second set, the Sugar Bears took control, building a 16-7 lead before closing the set on a 9-4 run to push their lead to 2-0 on the day. Central Arkansas hit .524 in the set, getting four kills from senior Samantha Anderson and two aces and two blocks from redshirt freshman Ravin Rhodes.

Central Arkansas wasted no time in putting to rest any notion of a Jackson State comeback, opening the third set by taking the first nine points and 14 of the first 15 before trading points the rest of the way to pick up their fifth sweep of the season. Anderson closed out the match with eight kills in the set, while Doss picked up eight more digs.

Anderson was on fire in the match, hitting .625 and collecting a match-high 15 kills, while Dunn added seven and senior Haley Tippett turned in six.  Junior Elizabeth Armstrong handed out 21 assists and sophomore Bailey Waddington had 15, and Doss turned in three aces. Defensively, Doss dug a match-high 19 digs and Rhodes had four blocks.

The Sugar Bears close out the weekend tomorrow morning at 10:30 AM, taking on Southern Illinois.
