Memphis, Tenn.- The Central Arkansas women's soccer team hit the road for the second game of the 2018 season on Sunday night, heading to Memphis, Tennessee to take on the Memphis Tigers at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex. The Bears were unable to find the net on the night, falling to the Tigers by a final score of 4-0.
Memphis (2-0-0) stormed out of the gates, blitzing Central Arkansas (0-1-1) with a flurry of pressure that ended with the game's first goal in the sixth minute, when Olivia Gauthier delivered a free kick to the feet of Maria Levasseur, who hammered it home to put the Tigers on top 1-0.
After a shot by juniorÂ
Jordan Slim was saved by Tiger keeper Elizabeth Moburg, Memphis again turned on the pressure firing off a pair of shots and a pair of corners before Clarissa Larisey corralled a through ball from Elizabeth Woerner and finished inside the left post to extend the Tiger lead to 2-0 in the 17
th minute.
The Bears would generate their best chance of the first half beginning in the 26
th minute, when junior
Bria Williams fired a shot off of a Memphis defender to generate a corner kick for senior
Autum Schwartz, who guided a perfect ball to fellow senior
Kristen Ricks. Unfortunately for the Bears, Ricks' shot bounced the wrong way off the post and fell to sophomore
Anika Sultan, who saw her shot saved by Moburg.
Memphis pushed the lead to 3-0 with a penalty kick in the 39
th minute, and a dangerous look from junior
Savannah Tidd was stopped by Moburg to send the match to break with that difference.
The Tigers would cap the night's scoring in the 56
th minute, again using a well-placed through ball to do the damage. This time it was Stasia Mallin playing forward to  Larisey, who found the back of the net to add to her penalty kick goal for the brace.
Central Arkansas would continue to attack, with senior
Camille Bassett, freshmen
Taylor Webb and
Gracie Hair, and Williams all generating dangerous looks, before it appeared that freshman
Morgan Rollow had put the Bears on the board in the 89
th minute, but her shot past Moburg was cleared off the line by a Memphis defender.
"We didn't come out ready to play tonight," said Central Arkansas head coach Jeremy Bishop. "Memphis put us under a ton of pressure and we didn't handle it very well, especially in the early part of the match. But as the match went on, we were able to create some good scoring chances and get more of the ball, so hopefully we can build on that as we continue to work to improve throughout the season."
On the night, Central Arkansas fired off 14 shots, but got just six looks on frame. In goal,
Lauren Mercuri made five saves.
Central Arkansas returns to action on Friday afternoon, heading to Monroe, Louisiana for the second of a four-match road trip, facing off with ULM at 4:00 PM.
