HUNTSVILLE, Texas _ The Sam Houston State Bearkats used a four-run fourth inning to down the University of Central Arkansas Bears 7-3 in their Southland Conference series finale on Sunday at Don Sanders Stadium.
The first-place Bearkats (28-13, 15-3) won the series 2-1. UCA, which won the opener 13-2 on Friday, is now 23-16 and 11-7.
SHSU scored single runs in the first and third innings before putting up four in the fourth. UCA scored twice in the sixth on junior Tyler Smith's third home run, a two-run shot that scocred right fielder Coby Potvin. Â
The Bears managed just four hits off a combination of three Bearkats pitchers, with Potvin getting two of those, including an RBI single in the eighth inning that closed the UCA deficit to 6-3. SHSU starter Hayden Wezneski held UCA without a hit until the sixth and got the victory to improve to 3-2. Junior Cody Davenport (3-2) took the loss for UCA, going four innings and allowing six runs.Â
The Bears will face Arkansas State in non-conference action at 6:30 Tuesday in Jonesboro before returning to SLC play next weekend, hosting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Bear Stadium. Game times are 6 p.m. Friday, 4 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
