WICHITA, Kan. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears were held to a season-low two hits in an 8-2 loss to No. 24 Wichita State on Tuesday night at Eck Stadium.
The Bears (22-14) managed only a pair of hits off a trio of Shocker pitchers and scored single runs in the fifth and ninth innings. WSU starter Preston Snavely (2-1) allowed one hit and one run while striking out five in five innings. UCA starter Gavin Stone (1-2) took the loss, allowing four runs in the first inning. Conner Williams, Taylor Anders and Ross Rogers combined for four scoreless innings to close out the game for the Bears.
After falling behind 8-0, the Bears got a run in the fifth inning when T.J. Black walked, went to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a fly ball and scored on a fielder's choice. In the top of the ninth, catcher William Hancock led off with a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on pinch hitter Dusty Wright's single to center field.
The Shockers finished with 16 hits to sweep the season series from the Bears after winning 9-6 in the first meeting in Conway. Luke Ritter had three hits to lead five players with multiple hits.
UCA returns to Southland Conference play at 6:30 Friday when it takes on first-place Sam Houston State in Huntsville, Texas. The Bears are tied for third place with a 10-5 record.
