PINE BLUFF, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears scored the game's first nine runs Tuesday to down the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions 9-1 in non-conference action at the Torii Hunter Complex.
Senior left hander Will Brand tossed one-hit ball for five innings to earn the victory. He stuck out four and walked none. Junior designated hitter Hunter Strong went 2 for 5 from the leadoff spot and had two RBI, as did senior catcher Justin McCarty and senior third baseman Rigo Aguilar.
The Bears (19-13) scored a run in the second inning when Keaton Presley led off with a double and scored on Aguilar's ground out. UCA added four runs in the third, using a two-run single by McCarty, an RBI double by Aguilar and a double steal by McCarty at second and Presley at the plate.
Another single run in the fourth, courtesty of a sacrifice fly by Josh Somdecerff, came in front of a three-roun fifth. Presley led off with a single and eventually scored on a throwing error. Strong added a two-run double to left field that brought in Eddy Sanchez and Dusty Wright for a 9-0 advantage. The Golden Lions (11-14) got their lone run in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI double by Ricardo Sanchez.
Beaux Bonvillain, Logan Gilbertson and Taylor Anders backed up Brand and allowed a combined two hits. The Golden Lions, who used six pitchers, had five errors on the day.
Presley finished 2 for 4 and scored three runs, while Sanchez scored twice.
The Bears return home to host UT-Martin in a non-conference weekend series, beginning at 6 p.m. Friday.
