KATY, Texas — In two regular season meetings between Central Arkansas and Abilene Christian this season, the Wildcats had no answer for the Sugar Bears' senior frontcourt tandem of
Taylor Baudoin and
Kierra Jordan, who had averaged a combined 41.5 points in those games.
The postseason proved no different on Friday as Baudoin and Jordan accounted for 63 percent of the Central Arkansas scoring output, combining for 34 points as the Sugar Bears (22-8) defeated the Wildcats (16-14) 54-41 in the second round of the Southland Conference Tournament for their fifth straight win in Katy and earning a date with 2nd-seeded Stephen F. Austin in Saturday's semifinal at 3:30pm.
Baudoin, who had averaged 24 points and 7.5 rebounds in the first two wins over the Wildcats this season, had her way once again – this time logging a double-double (her fourth of the season) with 20 points and 11 rebounds while also tying for the team lead with four steals. She hit 8 of 14 from the field, putting her at 65.9 percent against ACU for the year.
Jordan, who had averaged 17.5 points and 10.5 rebounds in the two regular-season clashes with the Wildcats, had 14 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocks on Friday. She shot 5-of-6 from the field, finishing the season 19 of 32 (59.4 percent) against ACU.
The Sugar Bears wasted no time jumping on the Wildcats, taking a 5-0 lead in just over a minute and would hold the advantage for the duration of the game. After going into the second quarter up 17-10, the Sugar Bears extended the lead to as many as 12 before taking a 28-19 lead to the locker room at the half.
ACU would make a small dent in the Sugar Bear lead in the third quarter, getting as close as five on two occasions, but Central Arkansas would score the Wildcats 10-5 over the final 4:12 of the quarter to lead 43-33 going into the fourth.
In the final period, the Sugar Bears would limit ACU to just 8 points on 21.4 percent shooting - surrendering just one field goal over the final 8:05 to punch their ticket to Saturday's semifinal as they chase their third consecutive tournament championship.
Kamry Orr added 8 points, 4 assists and 4 steals for the Sugar Bears;
Angel Williams had 6 points on 2-of-3 shooting from 3-point range;
Taylor Sells had 3 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals, and
Antonija Bozic added 3 points, 2 rebounds and 2 steals.
After completing the season sweep of ACU the Sugar Bears now turn their attention to attempting to avoid a sweep as they meet up with a Ladyjack squad that won both regular-season meetings – winning 59-46 in Nacogdoches and 55-50 in Conway.
It will be a rematch of last season's championship game in which the Sugar Bears won 60-35, the lowest score for a team in Southland championship game history. It will be the fourth meeting between the teams at the Southland tournament with the Sugar Bears owning a 2-1 advantage having also won 64-58 in 2011 for their first-ever win at the tournament; and suffering a 64-59 defeat in 2013.
