UCA TAKES SERIES FROM CREIGHTON WITH 7-6 WIN

CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears had a four-run fourth inning and turned 12 hits into a 7-6 victory over the Creighton Bluejays on Sunday in their series finale at Bear Stadium.

UCA (4-6) took the series 2-1, its first series victory of the season. The Bears broke open a 2-2 tie with the four runs then added a single run in the sixth. From there, UCA had to hold on for the win as the Bluejays (5-4) scored four runs over the last three innings, and had the go-ahead run on base in the ninth when Cody Davenport forced a ground ball out to end it.

UCA took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning off Creighton starter Ryan Connolly, who allowed four earned runs in 3 1/3 innings and took the loss. Keaton Presley walked to lead off the inning and went to third on Justin McCarty's base hit to left center. Presley scored on Josh Somdecerff's ground out. Rigo Aguilar followed with an RBI bunt single in front of the plate to make it 2-0.

In the fourth, the Bears got four runs on just three hits, sending eight batters to the plate. Dusty Wright and Aguilar had consecutive one-out singles and T.J. Black reached on a sacrfice bunt and throwing error, scoring Wright. After Hunter Strong walked, Creighton reliever Ian Evans came on and moved all three runners with a balk before throwing a pitch.

An RBI groundout by Coby Potvin made it 5-2 and Tyler Smith's single up the middle brought home Strong with the sixth run. An infield single by Strong in the sixth pushed UCA's lead to 7-2. Junior Cody Davenport, who relieved starter Will Brand in the fourth inning, went the rest of the way, and worked out of trouble several times to earn his first win of the season, striking out seven Bluejays.

Aguilar, a senior third baseman from El Paso, Texas, finished 3 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Strong, Somdecerff and Wright all had two hits each.

The Bears host Mississippi Valley State on Tuesday (7 p.m.) and Wednesday (3 p.m.) at Bear Stadium before opening Southland Conference play on the road at McNeese State this weekend.
