San Antonio, Texas – The Central Arkansas women's tennis program overcame a late rally by the UTSA Roadrunners to earn a 4-3 win on Saturday afternoon. The win was UCA's eighth in a row, extending the longest streak in the Southland Conference.
Central Arkansas (9-2) found itself in a hole early in the doubles competition as
Chunan Xiang and
Amiru Shimoguchi dropped the number two match against Laura Cabrera and Sonia Madronal by a score of 2-6.
QiLi Ma and
Rada Manataweewat evened things up for the Sugar Bears at the number three spot, taking out Ivana Ilic and Charleen Tiwari 6-4 for their ninth win in a row, before
Pornpawee Pramethong and
Marli Van Heerden secured the point at the number one position, defeating Denisa Ibrahimovich and Kylee Kato 6-2 to put the Sugar Bears up 1-0 with their sixth win in a row.
Hee-Jin Oh opened up the singles portion of the match by extending the Central Arkansas lead to 2-0 with 6-1, 6-1 over Ilic at the number three position, before Tiwari put UTSA (5-9) on the board with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Ma in the number four match. Pramethong answered for the Sugar Bears with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) win over Ibrahimovich at the number one spot, before the Roadrunners got a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 form Diya Menon at the number six spot and a 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-0 win from Cabrera at the number two to even the match at 3-3.
Van Heerden would drop the first set of her decisive number five match with Kato 6-7 (3-7), but would rebound to take the second 6-4 and the third 6-3 to secure the match for Central Arkansas and improver her singles record to 8-0 on the year.
The Sugar Bears return to SLC play with a pair of road matches next weekend, taking on Sam Houston State at 1:00 PM on Saturday and Lamar at 12:00 PM on Sunday.
