Birmingham, Alabama – The Central Arkansas Beach Bears closed out their opening weekend of play in dominant fashion on Saturday, dropping just two sets on their way to a 5-0 sweep of Austin Peay.
Aly Brinkley and
Kimberly Schnars led off for Central Arkansas, earning their third win of the young season with a 22-20, 21-13 defeat of Claire Darland and Nina Korfhage in the exhibition match, before
Mackenzie Dear and
Shelby Holmes put the Beach Bears on the board by taking out Kaylee Taff and Chloe Stitt 21-11, 21-18 at the number five slot.
Kristine Hjembo and
Colene Hamilton then closed out the first half for UCA with a 21-15, 17-21, 15-8 win against Ashley Slay and Cori Theiss in the fourth slot.
Jessica Martinez and
Stephanie Pollnow were first out of the gate for Central Arkansas in the second half, continuing the sweep with a 21-8, 21-16 victory over Hailey Turner and Caroline Waite in the number three match, before
Delaney Driver and
MC Rogers pushed the UCA lead to 4-0 with their third win of the season, a 21-11, 21-11 win against Jenna Panning and Brooke Moore at the number twos.
Haley Tippett and
Megan Nash then made it a clean sweep at the number ones, overcoming a slow start to move to 3-0 on the year with a 14-21, 21-6, 15-10 win over Ginny Gerig and Cecily Gable.
Central Arkansas returns home next weekend to host the first of two tournaments at the Beach Bear Sand Courts this year. UCA will take on Houston Baptist at 10:00 AM and Ottawa University at 2:00 PM, with the Huskies and Braves set to face each other at 12:00 PM.
