Monroe, Louisiana – Faced with just nine hours between the end of last night's walk-off win and the start of today's matchup with the Grambling State Tigers, the Central Arkansas Bears showed no signs of fatigue, getting a no-hitter from freshman
Rio Sanchez and picking up a 10-0 run-rule victory in five innings.
Sanchez, making her first collegiate appearance, turned in a stellar performance, retiring the first six batters she faced before allowing a pair of walks in the third inning. The young right would rebound from the free passes though, setting down the final seven batters that she faced to notch the 11
th no-hitter in Central Arkansas softball history.
As they did in each of yesterday's games, the Bears (2-1) wasted no time in getting the bats going, as
Oakley Sisemore reached on a one-out single in the top of the first before stealing second base. The Central Arkansas left fielder would then come around to score on a double from centerfielder
Reagan Sperling. Third baseman
Cylla Hill then pushed the UCA lead to 2-0, drving in Sperling with a double.
Catcher
Ryan McTaggart would get things started in the second inning, drawing a walk and advancing to third on a double from designated player
Brianna McArthur. Right fielder
Morgan Felts would bring in McTaggart with a sacrifice bunt and Sisemore drove in McArthur to extend the advantage to 4-0 UCA.
Second baseman
Libby Morris got the inning started in the fourth, with a single to left field, and then moved to second on a single from shortstop
Kate Myers. McArthur would reach on a fielder's choice that saw the Bears put runners on the corners, and a walk from Felts would load the bases, before UCA made the lead 7-0 with back-to-back RBI singles from Sisemore and first baseman
Kaylyn Shepherd.
Morris got the offense started again in the fifth, leading off with a double, before McTaggart blasted a two-run home run over the wall in left field to make it 9-0 Bears. After McArthur was hit by a pitch, and
Mary Mills Lochala reached on a fielder's choice,
Jessica Lee delivered in her first at-bat for Central Arkansas, collecting an RBI double to cap the scoring at 10-0.
The Bears return to action next weekend, heading to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to participate in LSU's Purple and Gold Challenge. The Bears will take on Oregon State at 9:30 AM on Friday morning, and will face off with #8 LSU at 5:00 PM Friday evening, before playing Southern Utah (9:30 AM) and Louisiana Tech (12:00 PM) on Saturday.
