HAMMOND, La. — For the first time since 2012, Central Arkansas came up short at Southeastern Louisiana as the Sugar Bears fell 78-70 in double overtime to the Lady Lions at the University Center on Saturday.
After falling behind by as many as 10 in the first quarter, the Sugar Bears (15-7, 8-3 Southland) closed out the first half on a 12-2 run to take a 30-27 halftime lead, but slumped in the second half as they shot just 8 of 27 (29.6 percent) as the Lady Lions (5-17, 4-7) took the lead late in the third quarter.
In the fourth, the teams were never separated by more than four points, and were within three or fewer for all but 24 seconds. Southeastern led most of the way until the Sugar Bears regained the lead on an
Angel Williams 3-pointer with 3:14 left – making it 52-50 Central Arkansas.
Southeastern would answer two minutes later, going up 53-52 on an Ashailee Brailey 3-pointer with 1:17 to play.
Kamry Orr drew the Sugar Bears even with a free throw to make it 53-53 with 40 seconds to play, but the Lady Lions went up again with just 7 seconds left on a basket at the rim from Caitlyn Williams.
With a timeout to advance the ball to the frontcourt, the Sugar Bears worked the ball to
Kamry Orr, who drove in for the game-tying layup with 1.5 seconds left, sending the teams to overtime after a long heave by Southeastern's Jaclyn Scholvin was off its mark.
In overtime, the Sugar Bears led by three with 2:23 before a pair of baskets by Williams put Southeastern ahead 63-62 with under a minute to go. Holding a one-point lead with 18 seconds left, the Lady Lions were whistled for an infraction on an inbounds pass, giving the Sugar Bears the ball under their own basket.
Southeastern would send Jordan to the line, where she hit one of two with 10 seconds left, pulling the Sugar Bears even once again at 63 with what would be the final score of the first overtime.
In the second overtime, the Lady Lions went 10 of 12 at the free throw line – with Taylin Underwood going 8-for-8 – as they outscored the Sugar Bears 15-8 in the decisive period, leading for the final 3:16.
