BEARS WIN TWO OF THREE ON SUNDAY

Conway – The Central Arkansas Bears found themselves faced with a full slate on Sunday after rain forced serious changes to the schedule of the 2018 UCA Invitational. UCA took to the field three times on the day, picking up a 2-1 win over Coppin State and a 10-2 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff while falling to Kansas 12-1.

Central Arkansas (5-5) opened the day with a stellar pitching performance from freshman Maddy Prough(1-0), who held Coppin State (0-3) to one run on seven hits and a pair of walks while striking out six in her first collegiate appearance.

CSU would strike first, getting an RBI double from first baseman Cayla Brown in the top of the first, and the Bears would prove unable to respond until the bottom of the sixth inning. Right fielder Morgan Felts opened things up with a one-out walk and stole second base before moving to third on a groundout from left fielder Oakley Sisemore. The Bears then took advantage of an Eagle miscue, as Felts would score the tying run on a dropped fly ball off the bat of centerfielder Reagan Sperling. Central Arkansas would then get the win in dramatic fashion, as shortstop Kate Myers picked up a two-out single to drive in first baseman Rachel Haberman and give the Bears the win.

Against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, it would be the offense that would carry Central Arkansas, as the Bears pounded out 10 runs on five hits and 10 walks. Myers went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored, while designated player Brianna McArthur was 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBI.

Ellie Reaves (1-2) earned the win for UCA, limiting the Golden Lions (3-4) to a pair of runs on six hits and a walk while striking out two in 5.0 innings. Rio Sanchez worked the final inning, striking out one and handing out one walk.

Central Arkansas was unable to get the offense going against Kansas (11-2), getting just a double from third baseman Audrey Pratt and an RBI double from McArthur.

Kailla Searcy (0-2) took the loss for the Bears, surrendering five runs on six hits, while Haberman allowed five runs on four hits in 3.1 innings. Jordan Ward pitched the final 0.2 innings, giving up a pair of runs on two hits.

Central Arkansas closes out the UCA Invitational tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 PM, taking on Austin Peay.
