CONWAY, Ark. _ Another men's basketball victory for the University of Central Arkansas over Little Rock on Saturday at the Jack Stephens Center would accomplish two things.
A victory, coupled with their 78-65 win over the Trojans 10 days ago at the Farris Center, would give the visiting UCA Bears a sweep of the season series with their in-state rival. Secondly, the four points earned by a victory would seal the first "Governor's I-40 Challenge" competition for UCA, with three sports remaining in the year-long competition.
UCA leads Little Rock 18.5 points to 3.5 points through the fall sports plus the one basketball game. With 43 total points available over 11 sports this year, 22.5 points, which UCA would have with a victory Saturday, would wrap up the competition with men's and women's track and field and baseball remaining on the slate.
The Bears played one of their most complete games of the season in the victory over the Trojans on Nov. 28. UCA shot 50.9 percent from the field, 50 percent (10 of 20) from three-point range and 73.7 percent at the free-throw line. The Bears had four players in double figures, led by sophomore point guard DeAndre Jones with a career-high 23 points, including four three-pointers.
However, the Bears will have to play considerably better than they did in their last outing, an 86-41 loss at Louisville on Wednesday night. The Bears, in the middle of a five-game road swing, shot 25 percent from the field _ making just 16 field goals _ and were just 5 of 24 (20.8 percent) from three-point range in their lowest scoring game since Nov. 11, 2016 when they lost 79-47 at Wisconsin.
Little Rock (4-5) is coming off a 68-62 home loss to Bradley on Tuesday, but did beat Southland Conference foe Sam Houston State 79-52 after the loss to UCA to break a two-game losing streak. The Trojans' leading scorer, junior guard Rayjon Tucker, had 33 points against SHSU and has scored in double figures in all eight games he has played, including 20 in the first UCA game, despite going just 8 of 23 from the field.
The Trojans made just 4 of 21 from the free-throw line against the Bears and are ranked 349th out of 353 NCAA Division I teams in the nation at 57.3 percent shooting from the foul line. Little Rock was 10 of 22 (45.5 percent) against Bradley after hitting 23 of 31 (74.2 percent) against SHSU. UCA is shooting 72.3 percent from the line, fourth-best in the SLC. Jones leads the Bears at 90 percent, while senior Thatch Unruh stands at 84.2 percent.
Approximate tip-off time is 5:30 p.m. Saturday, following the Little Rock women's game against Kansas State which begins at 3 p.m. at the Jack Stephens Center. The game will be carried live on The Bear 91.3 with Justin Acri and at ucasports.com/KUCA.
