CONWAY — Central Arkansas had its best perimeter shooting and rebounding day of the season on Monday, hitting a season-high eight 3-pointers and grabbing a season-best 53 rebounds as the Sugar Bears doubled up Williams Baptist 70-35 in the Farris Center.
The Sugar Bears (5-4) – who came into the game just 12-of-94 from beyond the arc on the season – nearly doubled their season total by going 8-for-12, led by sophomore guard Savannah Lowe's 3-for-3, while holding the Lady Eagles to 0-for-11 and 25.6 percent (11 of 43) overall.
The Sugar Bears also dominated on the glass, more than doubling the Lady Eagles' total with a 53-26 advantage. The 27-rebound margin was by far the Sugar Bears' best of the season, with the previous high being a 12-rebound advantage over Crowley's Ridge on Dec. 1.
Leading the charge on the boards was junior guard Taylor Sells, who finished with 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting and a career-high 11 rebounds for her first double-double as a Sugar Bear. Sells was one of three Sugar Bears to reach double figures in scoring, with senior Kamry Orr netting a game-high 15 and Lowe going for a season-high 11 in 13 minutes – her highest point total since November of last season when she had 12 against Crowley's Ridge. Freshman Carley Hudspeth finished with 9 points on 4-for-8 shooting in 18 minutes.
Junior guard Maddie Goodner had career highs of 5 assists and 5 steals, while sophomore forward Mekaylan Hicks equaled a career high with 4 blocked shots.
The Sugar Bears had 22 offensive rebounds in the win, their fifth time in nine games to reach 20 offensive boards. They came into Monday's game ranking 12th nationally in offensive rebounding at 18 per game. Lowe led the way, with 4 of her 6 rebounds coming on the offensive end.
Williams hung around early, leading the Sugar Bears 6-4 late in the first quarter. The Sugar Bears took a 7-6 lead on an Alanie Fisher 3-pointer, which began a 16-0 run over a 3:15 span to end the quarter with Central Arkansas ahead 20-6.
The Lady Eagles would not draw any closer than 8, cutting it to 22-14 early in the 2nd quarter before the Sugar Bears finished out the half on an 18-4 run capped by a long, running 3-pointer from Sells just before the halftime buzzer.
Williams Baptist was led by 10 points from Ashlyn Ellis and 13 rebounds from Teara Walker.
The Sugar Bears now move on to a meeting with Kansas State on Thursday, their final non-conference test before Southland play begins in the Farris Center on Dec. 31 against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
