BEARS CLINCH SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE TITLE WITH WIN OVER SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA

Conway -

After breaking the program record for consecutive wins (seven) Friday night in their victory over Nicholls, Central Arkansas (14-3-1, 9-1-0 SLC) would extend the win streak to eight and clinch the Southland Conference title after defeating the Lady Lions of Southeastern Louisiana 3-0. The win gives Central Arkansas their second conference title in three years.

The Bears would get off to a flying start, creating chances early on in the match that included a strike from Hadley Dickinson in the fourth minute, forcing Southeastern keeper Nadine Maher to make her first save of the afternoon. After seeing plenty of possession, the Bears would finally open up the scoring in the 19th minute after Connie Awuku-Darkoh was brought down by a Lady Lion defender in the 18 yard box to earn a penalty kick. Awuku-Darkoh stepped up and buried the penalty in the bottom right corner and gave the Bears a 1-0 advantage. It would be her 11th goal of the season.

Not even two minutes later, Camille Bassett would double Central Arkansas's advantage after she and Dickinson combined in the 18 yard box, leading to Bassett finishing through the keeper's legs and giving the Bears a 2-0 lead. Central Arkansas would again control the ball and keep the majority of the possession during the later stages of the first half and would see an opportunity from Bria Williams just before halftime in which she saw her strike flash just wide in the 45th minute as the Bears went into halftime with a 2-0 advantage.

The second half saw UCA again keep much of the ball, limiting chances for SLU. The Bears would nearly grab a third in the 63rd minute as Dickinson's shot from Bassett's cross was on target, but right Maher.

The Bears would grab their third goal late in the second half in the 88th minute after Savannah Tidd was able to dribble down to the left touchline and square the ball across to Morgan Hurd, who made no mistake as she smashed it home down the middle of the net, sealing the victory for the Bears.

Central Arkansas head coach Jeremy Bishop had nothing but praise for his team after clinching conference this afternoon.

"It's all credit to these girls. They work so hard. They came into the season with the goal of earning this seed [#1 in SLC] and have the best chance possible to get through the tournament and to be able to achieve that, it's big time," said Bishop.

Central Arkansas wraps up regular season Southland Conference play this Friday night as they take on Northwestern State. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
