BEARS RETURN HOME WITH OT VICTORY MOMENTUM

CONWAY, Ark. _ Coming off a dramatic double overtime victory last Saturday, the University of Central Arkansas Bears return home to the Farris Center on Wednesday night to host the Incarnate Word Cardinals. Tip-off is 7 p.m.

The 100-91 victory over the Lamar Cardinals on Saturday had plenty of highlights, including a rare triple-double by freshman point guard DeAndre Jones and a Southland Conference record by senior guard Jordan Howard. Jones, a 5-foot-11, 160-pounder, finished with 13 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists to join former NBA superstar Scottie Pippen as the only UCA players to record a triple-double.

Howard, a senior from Chandler, Ariz., scored a team-high 27 points, but more importantly, connected three times from three-point range to break the conference career three-point record. McNeese State's Demond Mallett held the record since 2001 with 331 threes. Howard is already the career three-point leader at UCA and is now second in career scoring at UCA, just 107 points behind UCA Sports Hall of Famer Clifton Bush.

Freshman 7-0 center Hayden Koval returned from resting a sprained ankle in the previous game to score 18 point against Lamar, including the free throw in the final seconds of regulation that tied the game at 80-80 and sent it to overtime. Senior Mathieu Kamba had 15 points and nine rebounds and junior Thatch Unruh added 12 points and nine rebounds.

UCA's defense also did its job against the Cardinals, holding Lamar to 4 of 31 shooting from beyond the arc. The Cardinals entered the game as the second-best three-point shooting team in the SLC behind the Bears.

UIW (5-8, 0-3) enters Wednesday's game on a five-game losing streak, dating back to a win over UMKC on Dec. 16, its only victory over a Division I school this season. However, the Cardinals have never lost to the Bears in six career matchups. UIW held off UCA 81-80 last year at the Farris Center when Shawn Johnson made 1 of 2 free throws with 2.5 seconds left.

Kamba led the Bears with 25 points and nine rebounds, while Howard scored 18. UIW went to the free-throw line 26 times, making 18, while UCA was 9 of 11 at the line. UCA enjoyed a 50-36 halftime lead but the Cardinals then outscored the Bears 45-30 in the second half to earn the victory.

Simi Socks, who led the Cardinals with 20 points in last year's win, leads UIW in scoring at 11.8 points per game. Johnson is their leading rebounder (6.7) and Jalin Hart is their top assist man (3.9), which ranks ninth in the SLC. The Cardinals are the top three-point shooting team in the league, hitting at a 72.6-percent clip.

After Wednesday's game, the Bears return to the road for another two-game road trip, at Nicholls State on Saturday afternoon in a doubleheader with the Sugar Bears and at New Orleans on Wednesday  night.
