HAMMOND, La. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears never got the timely hits they needed Sunday in dropping the series finale 3-2 to the Southeastern Louisiana Lions in Southland Conference action at Pat Kenelly Diamond.
  Â
The Bears (28-23, 15-12) lost their first conference series since mid-March and were swept for just the second time this season in SLC play. The second-place Lions (34-16, 20-10) scored three runs in the first four innings and then held off the Bears. UCA stranded 10 baserunners on the day, including a runner at third base in each of the last four innings.Â
Trailing 3-0, the Bears cut the deficit to just one run in the fifth inning. Designated hitter Dusty Wright led off with a walk and went to second on Eddy Sanchez' base hit. Michael Haun's sacrifice bunt moved both runners before Keaton Presley singled to center to score Wright with UCA's first run. A fielder's choice by Jansen McCurdy brought in Sanchez to make it 3-2.
Senior Brandon Hagerla, in relief of starter Mark Moyer, held the Lions scoreless the final five innings, allowing just two hits and walking one. Moyer (5-3) allowed eight hits and three runs in three innings.
UCA managed just seven hits off three Lions pitchers, with senior shortstop Brooks Balisterri going 2 for 4. SLU starter Carlisle Koestler (4-3) got the victory, allowing just four hits and two earned runs in 5 2/3 innings. Leadoff batter Ryan Byers had three of SLU's 10 hits.
The Bears have Round 3 of the "Rock N Roar Rivalry" against the Little Rock Trojans on Tuesday night at Gary Hogan Field in Little Rock. First pitch is 6 p.m. The series is tied at 1-1.
UCA closes out the regular season with a three-game conference series with Nicholls State, beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday at Bear Stadium.
