PATRIOTS TAKE SERIES WITH 7-1 WIN OVER BEARS

CONWAY, Ark. _ The Dallas Baptist Patriots broke a 1-1 tie with five runs in the eighth inning Saturday  and pulled away to a 7-1 victory over the University of Central Arkansas Bears in non-conference action at Bear Stadium.

UCA starter Mark Moyer (4-2), who carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning, gave up a leadoff home run to DBU's Garrett Wolforth in the top of the eighth to start the Patriots' rally. DBU added four more runs in the frame, and a single run in the ninth, to take the series 2-1.

UCA (19-18) was held to just four hits for the second straight day. The Bears' lone run came in the third inning when junior Keaton Presley reached on an error, went to second on a wild pitch and to third on another error. Hunter Strong's base hit to left field scored Presley.

The Patriots, who entered the game fifth in the nation in home runs, hit three more home runs in the game after none in the previous two games of the series. DBU finished with eight hits, four of them home runs, including a grand slam by designated hitter Matt Duce.

Moyer took the loss, his first in his last five outings. DBU's Dalton Higgins, who recorded one out in the  eighth on five pitches, got the win to improve to 5-0.

UCA hosts Southland Conference leader Sam Houston State in a three-game series beginning at 6 p.m. Friday at Bear Stadium.
