Beaumont, Texas - The Central Arkansas Bears returned to action on Saturday afternoon looking to salvage their Southland Conference series against Lamar with a win in the third game. The Bears were able to do just that, riding a stellar pitching performance from senior
Kayla Gomness to a 2-0 win.
Gomness (11-14) was nearly unhittable on the day, surrendering just one single on the day and waiting until the seventh inning to do so. She allowed just two other baserunners in the game, one on a walk in the fourth inning and the other on an error in the seventh while striking out two batters. The complete game was the 16
th of her season.
Central Arkansas (17-29, 7-11 SLC) grabbed a lead in the second inning, when shortstop
Kate Myers picked up a one-out triple and then came in to score on an RBI ground out from second baseman
Krissy Fontillas.
The Bears would add to their lead in the fifth inning, as centerfielder
Briana Whisenhunt collected a one-out walk and stole second base before coming in to score on a single up the middle from first baseman
Kaylyn Shepherd.
Lamar (22-21, 12-6 SLC) would create just one scoring threat on the day, putting a pair on in the bottom of the seventh, but Gomness would get a foul out to left field and a ground out to third base to end the game.
At the plate, Whisenhunt went a perfect 2-for-2 with two walks, two stolen bases, and a run scored, while Shepherd went 2-for-4 with a run batted in. Myers and left fielder
Hannah Stirton each added a hit.
Central Arkansas closes out non-conference play on Tuesday evening, heading to Stillwater, Oklahoma to take on the Oklahoma State Cowgirls at 6:00 PM. The Bears will then return home for senior weekend against Southeastern Louisiana. UCA will have a graduation ceremony for seniors Whisenhunt, Stirton, Gomness,
Randi Wallace,
Tylor Dodson, and
Bailey Reynolds prior to Friday's 4:00 PM doubleheader and will then have traditional Senior Day activities before Saturday's 12:00 PM game.
