NO. 24 COMMODORES RALLY PAST BEARS 10-5

NASHIVILLE, Tenn. _ A five-run fifth inning keyed a 10-5 come-from- behind victory for the No. 24 Vanderbilt Commodores over the University of Central Arkansas Bears on Tuesday at Hawkins Field.

The Bears (6-7) led 3-1 heading to the bottom of the fifth inning but gave up the lead for good as the Commodors converted four hits into five runs against a combination of three UCA pitchers. UCA starter Mark Moyer, a redshirt freshman from Russellville, was solid through four innings, allowing just one run. He left after putting the first two runners on in the fifth. He ended up allowing two hits and two earned runs in 4.0 innings.

After that, the Bears used seven more pitchers, with Will Brand (1-1) eventually getting the loss.

The Bears struck first in the opening inning on Hunter Strong's walk and William Hancock's RBI double to right-center. After Vandy tied it in the bottom of the second, UCA added two more runs in the fourth when Rigo Aguilar singled to center, moved to second on Ty Tice's ground out, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a fielder's choice by Eddy Sanchez. Michael Haun then brought in Sanchez with a double to left center for a 3-1 UCA lead.

From there it was mostly the Commodores as they scored five in the fifth, three more in the seventh and one in the eighth to improve to 8-5 overall.

UCA picked up a pair of runs in the eighth inning, on a leadoff double by Hancock, an RBI groundout by Sanchez and an RBI infield single by Haun that scored Aguilar.

Vanderbilt out-hit UCA 10-7, with most of those coming in the fnal five innings, For the Bears, Hancock and Haun had two hits apiece, Haun and Sanchez had two RBI each and Aguilar scored twice.

The Bears and Commodores will meet again at 4 p.m. Wednesday before UCA comes home to open Southland Conference play this weekend against McNeese State at Bear Stadium.
