Conway – The Central Arkansas Bears returned to action at Farris Field on Tuesday night, playing host to the ULM Warhawks. Despite a strong pitching performance from senior
Kayla Gomness, the Bears dropped a pitcher's duel by a final score of 1-0.
The Warhawks got the game's first hit in the top of the third, before breaking through for the only run either pitcher would allow in the fourth. Pitcher Melanie Coyne led off the inning with a double down the left-field line before coming in to score on a double form first baseman Jessie Watts.
The Bears (6-14) tallied their first hit of the game in the bottom of the fourth, when catcher
Lauren Brooks collected a one-out single. A sacrifice bunt from shortstop
Kate Myers moved Brooks into scoring position, but a groundout ended the threat.
The Bears would put another runner in scoring positon in the fifth inning, when right fielder
Briana Whisenhunt put a two-out triple off the base of the wall in centerfield but a long fly ball off the bat of designated player
Kaylyn Shepherd was caught at the warning track to end the inning.
Gomness (4-6) took the loss despite allowing just one run on five hits and a walk. She struck out four in 7.0 innings.
Central Arkansas takes the field again tomorrow night, welcoming Mississippi Valley State to Farris Field tomorrow night. First pitch is set for 5:00 PM.
