CONWAY, Ark. _ A walk-off walk in the 12th inning handed the University of Central Arkansas Bears a 5-4 victory over the Southeast Missouri Redhawks on Tuesday night at Bear Stadium.
The Bears (9-13) scored in the 12th without the aid of a hit. UCA loaded the bases against SEMO junior reliever Matthew Wade on a hit by pitch (Keaton Presley), and intentional walk (Hunter Strong) and a conventional walk (Rigo Aguilar).Â
Redshirt freshman Chase Hagerty then replaced Wade on the mound with a 2-0 count on UCA sophomore catcher William Hancock, who drew the game-winning walk to end it after 3 hours and 25 minutes.
The Bears managed to win with just five hits over 12 innings. UCA, trailing 3-1 after four innings, took advantage of two costly errors by the Redhawks to score three runs in the fifth inning on just one infield hit. Jansen McCurdy led off with a single and stole second base. Strong walked before SEMO starter Nate Green left the game.
Aguilar reached on a throwing error by new pitcher Adam Pennington on a sacrifice bunt attempt, scoring McCurdy. Hancock then hit a ground ball to third base that SEMO's Kyle Bottger threw wide of home, allowing Strong to score. Eddy Sanchez followed with a squeeze bunt that scored Aguilar for a 4-3 UCA lead.
The Redhawks (10-8), an NCAA Regional team a year ago, tied the game in the top of the ninth on base hits by Danny Wright and Clayton Evans. UCA redshirt freshman righthander Mark Moyer (1-1), who came on to start the seventh, worked the final six innings, controlling the Redhawks. Moyer allowed just 4 hits and 1 earned run, striking out 3.Â
Moyer set the Redhawks down in order in the 10th and 11th and worked around a walk in the top of the 12th, setting up the Bears for the walk-off win. UCA sophomore starter Cody Davenport went 3 innings in his first start since the season opener, allowing 4 hits and 1 earned run and striking out 3. Senior Brandon Hagerla worked the middle three innings, allowing 3 hits and 2 earned runs.
UCA's first run came in the third on a sacrifice fly by Hancock that scored McCurdy. The Bears' five hits came from five different players, with Hancock picking up a pair of RBI. Chris Osborne went 4 for 6 for the Redhawks.
The Bears host Mississippi Valley State at 6 p.m. Wednesday and then return to Southland Conference play at home this weekend against the New Orleans Privateers.Â
