HOWARD, KOVAL LEAD BEARS PAST BRAVES 102--76

CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears scored 100 points for the second consecutive game Sunday, dominating Alcorn State 102-76 in non-conference action at the Farris Center.

UCA, which lost 106-101 in overtime to No. 18 UCLA in its last outing, shot 54.7 percent from the field and made 11 three-pointers in improving to 2-2 on the season. Four Bears finished in double figures, led by senior guard Jordan Howard's four three-pointers and 27 points. Freshman center Hayden Koval added a career-high 22 points, hitting 8 of 11 overall and 2 of 2 from three-point range. At one stretch early in the game, Koval scored nine straight points for the Bears.

The Bears shot 55.6 percent overall in the first half and led by as much as 23 points before taking a 52-30 lead to the locker room.

"I was really proud of our guys,' said UCA head coach Russ Pennell. "That's kind of the theme we've been talking about is, what you did at UCLA, that was outstanding as far as effort. Now can you come out and do it again, maybe when it's not on TV and it's not a full house and all those different things. And I thought today, the guys grew up a lot. I thought today was a big statement of our maturity and we were able to handle playing well before and then come back with even better effort.'

The Bears, who played 14 players, had a season-high 25 assists, with DeAndre Jones finishing with a career-high seven, Thatch Unruh with five and Howard with four. Senior Ethan Lee scored 12 points and had a team-high seven rebounds, while Unruh scored 14 points and made a pair of threes. Three Bears went out with minor injuries, including senior Mathieu Kamba, sophomore Aaron Weidenaar and freshman Matthew Mondesir.

"You have three guys that you recruited to play minutes, and they're not in there, and you don't even miss a beat,' said Pennell. "And that's what I love about our depth. I thought the guys that got their opportunity really played well. I thought Darraja (Parnell) and Otas (Iyekekpolor) off the bench, and DeAndre has been phenomenal, those three really gave us a lift.

Koval, a 7-footer from Prosper, Texas, is averaging 13.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.7 blocked shots in his first four career games.

"The thing I love about Hayden is he's so coachable,' said Pennell. "After every game when we watch film, you can almost see it in practice... he will take something he did poorly and he'll correct it and be better the next time out. The thing with him is he's still not physically where he will be in the next couple of years. That's the thing that just excites me to death. When he gets 15, 20 more pounds on him, he's really, really going to be tough to handle inside.'

The Braves (0-5), which lost by 17 points at Top 25 Baylor on Friday,  got 14 points each from Reginal Johnson, A.J. Mosby and Troymain Crosby.

The Bears play at South Carolina State at 6:30 (CT) on Tuesday in Orangeburg, S.C., and at Tulsa at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
