Chicago, Illinois – The Central Arkansas men's soccer team hit the road on Saturday, travelling to Chicago, Illinois for a Missouri Valley Conference match-up against the Loyola Ramblers. The Bears would get a goal late in the second overtime period from
Pepe San Roman, earning their third-straight MVC win with a 3-2 victory.
Loyola (4-5-0, 0-3-0 MVC) controlled the pace for much of the first half, firing off six shots while holding the Bears (4-6-0, 3-1-0 MVC) to just two shots. The Ramblers got the game's first solid look in the fifth minute, on a header from Lucas Imrie, and added a look from Elliot Collier in the sixth minute, but UCA keeper
Marc Olsen made the save on both occasions. Olsen would add another save in the 25
th minute on another shot from Imrie, before San Roman gave the Bears their first shot on target in the 28
th minute, and
Donald Benamna put another shot on frame in the 30
th minute, but LUC keeper Aiden Aylward made the save on both.
Central Arkansas would strike first, as Benamna made a long run into the Rambler box, where he fielded a pass from
Chris Holmes and slid the ball inside the back post to put the Bears up 1-0 in the 50
th minute. The Ramblers would even the score 58
th minute, as Fabian Lifka fired a free kick into the UCA box, where Imrie collected the ball and netted his first goal of the year. UCA would retake the lead in the 72
nd minute, as
Jake Bates launched a throw-in to
Daltyn Knutson, who headed the ball to
Niklas Brodacki. Brodacki followed up with a header of his own, putting the Bears up 2-1 with his seventh goal of the season. Loyola again found an equalizer, when Aiden Megally headed home a cross from Tyler Biggs in the 82
nd minute. Brodacki looked to have found the game-winner in the 86
th minute, but his shot bounced the wrong way off the post, sending the match to overtime.
The Bears would get the golden goal in the 107
th minute, as
Blake Stricker fired a pass to San Roman, who worked to his left and shot from the edge of the box, beating Aylward for the game-winner.
For the match, the Bears put six of their nine shots on goal, led by Benamna, who was on target with all three of his attempts. San Roman put both of his shots on goal, while Brodacki was accurate with one of his two shots. In goal, Olsen made five saves to earn the win.
"This is a huge result for us," said UCA head coach Ross Duncan following the match. Away wins are always big, but a conference win at Loyola is almost unheard of. They don't give away results here, and hardly give up goals, so to score three took a special attacking performance. Coach McKay deserves a ton of credit on this one, he took the scout and it couldn't have been more spot-on. Our guys came in knowing exactly what to expect and that's a huge advantage. They had to make big adjustments in the match and that's one hundred percent down to the work Mitch did. The attacking guys are the ones who show up on the scoresheet as the ones who won the game, and they deserve the attention, but for me, Marc was the man of the match. Some of the saves he pulled off were unreal. He also managed the game well and his kicking game was excellent."
The Bears take a breather from MVC play with a pair of matches this week. UCA will host cross-town rival Central Baptist for the Conway Derby at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, before heading to Birmingham, Alabama to face off with UAB at 7:00 PM on Saturday.
