CONWAY — Central Arkansas held Incarnate Word scoreless over the final 6:25 and finished the game with a 13-0 run to hold off the Cardinals 63-50 in the Farris Center on Saturday for the Sugar Bears' sixth straight win.
The Sugar Bears (15-4, 7-2 Southland) outscored the Cardinals (5-15, 3-6) 21-5 over the final quarter, most of it coming down the stretch after the teams had been locked in a 50-50 tie for nearly 2:30.
After falling behind by as many as 18 late in the first half, UIW staged a furious rally in the third quarter as they outscored the Sugar Bears 24-8 after putting up just 21 points in the first half. UIW's Imani Robinson scored 14 of her game-high 22 during the comeback for UIW, making 5 of 7 from the field and 4 of 4 at the free throw line in the quarter as the Cardinals took a 45-42 lead into the final frame.
The Sugar Bears had the answer in the fourth, however, in the form of Kierra Jordan. After logging just two points and no rebounds in seven minutes through the first three quarters, Jordan took over in the fourth with 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting while grabbing five rebounds.
Led by Jordan's five, the Sugar Bears outrebounded the Cardinals 14-6 in the last quarter and forced four UIW turnovers while committing just one. The Sugar Bears also limited the Cardinals to a single free throw attempt, while going 7 of 12 at the line on the other end.
Jordan and Maggie Proffitt – who was 3-of-3 from 3-point range – led the Sugar Bears with 13 points apiece. Brianna Mullins had 9 points, a season-high 11 rebounds, and 4 assists. Taylor Baudoin added 8 points, 7 rebounds, tied Mullins for the team lead with 4 assists, and blocked 2 shots in 28 minutes off the bench.
UIW was led by Robinson's 22, and Celia Garcia Pauper had 9 points and 8 rebounds – nearly 9 points and 3 rebounds below her season averages.
The win was the 496th for Central Arkansas head coach Sandra Rushing, coaching the 800th game of her 28-season head coaching career.
With the win, the Sugar Bears improve to 4-0 all-time against the Cardinals, and keep the longest active winning streak in the Southland intact as they head to McNeese on Tuesday.
