CONWAY — Central Arkansas got a season-high 16 points from
Olivia McWilliams, a career-high 5 blocks from
Raquel Logan, and the Sugar Bears went 11 of 12 from the free throw line in the final quarter as they pulled away from McNeese for a 67-52 win in the Farris Center on Wednesday.
The Sugar Bears (12-4, 4-2 Southland) scored their fourth straight win over the Cowgirls (9-8, 4-2) in less than a year, holding McNeese to 22 points below its season average on just 31.6 percent shooting on the night.
Meanwhile the Sugar Bears, ranked 10th in the nation in field goal percentage, were above 40 percent for the 7th straight game, shooting 41.8 percent including a 4th quarter in which they were 5 of 8 (62.5 percent) from the field.
With the game tied at 20 early in the 2nd quarter, the Sugar Bears went on an 8-0 run and outscored the Cowgirls 15-6 over the next five minutes to take control of the game, never letting the Cowgirls closer than six the rest of the way. A 12-4 run in the fourth quarter put the Cowgirls away for good, giving Central Arkansas a 15-point cushion with three minutes left. The lead hit 17 in the final minute on a pair of
Maggie Proffitt free throws before McNeese closed it out with the game's final points with 12 seconds left to set the final margin at 15.
Profit's 15 points trailed only McWilliams' 16 for Central Arkansas, the only two Sugar Bears to reach double figures. Since moving into a starting role over the last three games, McWilliams has averaged 11.3 points per game – up from just 2.0 in her first nine games.
Maggie Proffitt had 8 points and 7 rebounds in 22 minutes, and
Taylor Strickland added 8 points in just 13 minutes. Logan had 7 points and tied
Taylor Baudoin with a team-high 8 rebounds, and also blocked a career-high 5 shots – raising her career total to 89, moving her into 4th place in Sugar Bear history and 2nd in the program's Division I era behind only Courtney Duever's 96.
With the win, the Sugar Bears improve to 23-7 in their last 30 Southland Conference games in the Farris Center and 15-8 all-time against McNeese.
The Sugar Bears now hit the road for their next two, visiting New Orleans on Saturday and league-leader Stephen F. Austin next Wednesday.
