Beaumont, Texas – The Central Arkansas women's soccer returned to the pitch on Sunday afternoon, heading to Beaumont, Texas to battle the Lamar Cardinals. The Bears continued to rack up the goals, pushing their total to 13 in three Southland Conference matches with a 4-1 win on the day.
Central Arkansas (8-3-0, 3-0-0 SLC), who has led in 10 of its 11 matches this season, once again took a lead into the halftime break, as junior
Alex Moore collected a corner and pushed it over to fellow junior
Dayna Mounie, who placed it perfectly in the upper-right corner to give the Bears a 1-0 lead in the 29
th minute with her third goal in the past two games.
"Both Dayna and Alex were big on the weekend," said UCA head coach Jeremy Bishop. " They've been doing a good job of doing what we ask of them, as far as taking on player on the edges to either get service into the box or to get into to position to get shots. Dayna's goal came off of a corner that came out to Alex and she found Dayna, who put it in from distance just under the crossbar and just inside the post. It's always good when we can get points from our midfielders as well as our forwards."
The Bears added to their lead in the 48
th minute, as Moore fed sophomore
Camille Bassett, who beat Lamar (1-9-1, 0-2-1 SLC) keeper Rachel Gries to the far post for her fifth goal of the season. In the 54
th minute, is was Bassett's turn to put a tally in the assist column, as she fired a header off the crossbar and to the feet of sophomore
Ashley Smith, who put the rebound away to push the UCA lead to 3-0 with her sixth goal of the season. Freshman
Jordan Slim picked up UCA's final goal in the 70
th minute, gathering a pass from freshman
Anslea Haikey and sliding it under LU substitute keeper Lauren Lovejoy for her third goal of the season.
The Cardinals would get a goal back just 31 seconds later, when Jordan Mulnix scored on an assist from Tori Alanez, but that would be the only offense the Cardinals could generate on the day.
"It's great for the team to have the ability to play with the lead and make other teams chase the game a bit," said Bishop, of the fact that the Bears have led or been tied at the half in every match this season. "We're able to get behind teams because of that as they push forward to try and score to even the match, which is what we want. I think that we can play from behind if we need to, because we've got players that can calm the game down and we have scoring threats in the midfield, but we'd love to keep it going."
For the match, the Bears took 34 shots, putting 17 of them on goal. Sophomore
Autum Schwartz and senior
Chele Naudin led the way, with each putting three shots on target, while Mounie, Smith, and Bassett each put a pair of shots on frame. Five other Bears put a shot on target on the day. In goal, junior
Anna Hughes went untested in the first half, while sophomore
Lauren Mercuri made a pair of saves in the second half, as the UCA defense allowed just three shots on goal on the day.
Central Arkansas returns to the Bill Stephens Complex for a pair of matches next weekend. The Bears will host Incarnate Word at 7:00 PM on Friday, before welcoming Abilene Christian for a 1:00 PM match on Sunday.
"We're excited to be back home and hopefully continue to have some good crowds," said Bishop. "UIW has some really good players, they got a big win over Southeastern this weekend, and as they continue to play in Division I, they'll continue to get better. As for Abilene, they've been one of the better teams in the conference over the past few years, and they've beaten us the past couple of season, so we'll definitely have to show up ready to play."
