San Antonio, Texas – The Central Arkansas men's soccer team returned to the pitch against a familiar opponent on Saturday, heading to San Antonio, Texas for a rematch with the Incarnate Word Cardinals just six days after the teams played to a 1-1 draw in Conway. Despite leading for 73 minutes following an early goal, the Bears came up short on the day, falling to the Cardinals 2-1 in overtime.
Central Arkansas (2-3-1) wasted little time in getting on the board, as freshman
Niklas Brodacki continued his stellar start to the season, making a 40 yard run through the UIW (2-4-2) defense and beating UIW keeper Jorge Guzman in a one-on-one for his sixth goal of the season.
It looked like the Bears would add to their goal in the 51
st minute when Brodacki gathered a corner kick from junior
Pepe San Roman and fired a dangerous attempt, but Guzman made the save. The UIW net-minder was up to the task again just 40 seconds later, when freshman
Jonathan Gilkes put a shot on target.
The lead would hold until the 86
th minute, when the Cardinals took advantage of a long throw-in that resulted in a poor clearance from the Bears. Jelani Mark collected the clearance and found O'Neal Moore who fired a shot off the UCA defense and in to even the match at 1-1 with the clock winding down.
"We gave the game away late on a long throw," said UCA head coach Ross Duncan. "It's a very frustrating result, because we put ourselves into a position to take home a road win, and now we've lost it."
The Cardinals would again take advantage of some good luck in scoring the game-winner in the first overtime period, as Daniel Nevarez fired a shot off the post, collected his own rebound, and put it away for the golden goal.
On the night, Brodacki led the Central Arkansas offense with a pair of shots on goal, while Gilkes added one shot on target. Freshman
Marc Olsen made four saves in goal for the Bears.
"The guys are very disappointed because they did everything they needed to do up until that moment," said Duncan of the Cardinals' first goal. "But the game comes down to moments like that and we let ourselves down. The response to this will be important. I can see in their eyes that they're not satisfied. They know where they let themselves down and they will fix it."
Central Arkansas returns to action next Saturday, opening Missouri Valley Conference play on the road. The Bears will travel to Evansville, Indiana to battle the Evansville Purple Aces at 2:00 PM.
