Jonesboro, Ark. – The Central Arkansas women's soccer team completed their sweep of in-state opponents on Thursday afternoon, travelling to Jonesboro to take on Arkansas State. Despite outshooting the Red Wolves 29 to eight on the day, the Bears needed extra time to pick up the 1-0 win.
Central Arkansas (3-2-0) looked set to take a lead in the 21
st minute, when senior
Allie Coleman beat Red Wolf (1-2-1) keeper Kelsey Ponder, but ASU got a team save to keep the Bears off the board.
In the second half, the Bears again found themselves to be victims of chance, as junior
Dayna Mounie fired a laser off the post in the 69
th minute and Red Wolves got a team save on sophomore
Ashley Smith's shot in the 76
th minute.
After a relatively uneventful first overtime, it looked like Central Arkansas would suffer at the hands of the woodwork again in the second overtime session, as Mounie again banged a shot off the crossbar. Senior
Shelby Wilson was able to corral the rebound however, gathering the ball and slipping a pass to junior
Alex Moore, who slotted it inside the back post for the game-winner in the 107
th minute.
Central Arkansas put nine shots on goal on the day, including two each from Mounie and sophomore Camille Bassett, while Wilson, Coleman, Moore, Smith, and freshman
Anslea Haikey each put a single shot on target. In goal, junior
Anna Hughes made one save in the first half, while sophomore
Lauren Mercuri made a pair of saves in the second half and overtime.
"We played pretty well today," said UCA head coach Jeremy Bishop. "We created a lot of scoring chances, but just couldn't find the net. But we showed a log of composure and patience to keep going and not get frustrated."
The Bears return to action on Sunday, heading to Monroe, Louisiana to take on ULM at 1:00 PM.
