Conway – The Central Arkansas Bears took a break from Southland Conference play on Tuesday, playing host to the Jackson State Lady Tigers. The Bears got a 3-0 win on the evening, giving head coach David Kuhn the 600h win of his coaching career.
Midway through his eighth season in Conway, Kuhn has won a program-best 232 games as the Bears' skipper, a number that is the 10
th-highest in SLC history, and the second-highest among active Southland coaches.
Central Arkansas (23-11) wasted no time in taking a lead in the evening's game, grabbing a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Third baseman
Sam Forrest led off the inning with a single up the middle, before right fielder
Briana Whisenhunt beat out a bunt to give the Bears a pair of runners. After a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position, catcher
Jessie Taylor lofted a sacrifice fly to left field to drive in Forrest and give UCA a 1-0 lead. An illegal pitch would bring in Whisenhunt and push the lead to 2-0.
Designated player
Bailey Reynolds added to the lead in the bottom of the second, leading off the inning by crushing her first home run of the season over the fence in left-center field to extend the UCA lead to 3-0.
From that point on, the game was highlighted by quality pitching, as the teams would combine for just seven baserunners over the final four innings of play.
Kayla Gomness (6-2) was dominant in earning her sixth complete game of the season, as she allowed the Lady Tigers (2-16) just a pair of hits over the course of seven innings. She struck out two.
Forrest led the way for the Central Arkansas offense, turning in a 2-for-4 performance and scoring a run, while Reynolds, Whisenhunt, and shortstop
Kate Myers each added a hit.
UCA returns to Southland Conference play this weekend, travelling to Thibodaux, Louisiana for a three-game set at Nicholls. The Bears and Colonels will play a single game at 6:00 PM on Friday, before closing their series with a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
