HUNTSVILLE, Texas — After scoring more than 102 points per game over their last three home games, Central Arkansas had their fortunes reversed on the road on Saturday as Sam Houston state eclipsed the century mark against the Bears, scoring a 105-75 win at Johnson Coliseum.
"We were horrible, bottom line," said Central Arkansas head coach Russ Pennell. "And I'm not sure why. I don't know if it was travel or whatever else, or that we've been winning at home. We just didn't come with the right approach."
The Bearkats (15-12, 10-4 Southland) shot 55.4 percent for the game, including knocking down a season-high 16 3-pointers, hitting 48.5 percent from long range. The Bears (6-17, 5-8) meanwhile, shot 43.4 percent from the field and were 41.2 percent from 3-point range, and were 22 of 34 (64.7 percent) at the line, including going 16 of 21 in the 2nd half.
The major difference came on turnovers – as the Bearkats scored 26 points off 15 Bear turnovers, while UCA did not record a single point off 5 Bearkat turnovers. And while the Bears had a 17-13 advantage in offensive rebounds, the Bearkats had a higher conversion rate on their extended possessions, scoring 20 second-chance points to the Bears' 16.
"When you give up 26 off turnovers and 20 second chance, that's 46 points – and that's the game," Pennell said. "People talk about hot shooting – hot shooting doesn't get you beat. It's the other things. I tried telling them that at halftime. But giving up 46, you can't overcome that. You can absorb a hot-shooting team if you're doing the other things, but tonight it was a recipe for disaster because we did nothing well."
The Bears got a game-high 19 points from Jordan Howard, who hit a pair of 3-pointers to move past George Sitkowski for 4th in program history with 159 on his career. Justin Foreman had 16 points and Derreck Brooks 12 points and 6 rebounds. Mathieu Kamba added 7 points and 9 rebounds.
SHSU was led by Jalin Barnes' 19 points and Dakar Henderson's 18, with Jamal Williams adding 14 and Aurimas Majauskas 13.
The Bears will play their second of three straight road games on Monday when they travel to Lake Charles, La. to take on McNeese State before playing at Southeastern Louisiana next Saturday. After the road swing, the Bears will finish the season with three straight at home.
