Tulsa, Oklahoma – The Central Arkansas men's soccer team stepped out of Missouri Valley Conference play on Tuesday night, heading to Tulsa, Oklahoma to battle regional rival Oral Roberts. In a match that featured nine yellow cards and a pair of red cards between the sides, and saw the Bears play down a man for 15 minutes, Central Arkansas fell in double overtime by a finally tally of 3-2.
After a relatively quiet first half that saw Central Arkansas (2-6-1) and Oral Roberts (5-5-1) combing for just four shots on goal, the Bears broke the drought in 55
th minute, when an ORU foul in the box sent senior
Wes Carson to the penalty spot. Carson buried the PK, putting the Bears up 1-0 with his fifth goal of the season.
UCA would add to the lead in the 64
th minute, when freshman
Niklas Brodacki fired a rocket that ORU keeper Parker Griffith managed to knock away. The ball fell to fellow freshman
Krystian Sarzynski, who slammed it home to push the advantage to 2-0 with his first goal of the season.
That lead appeared to be safe until the 75
th minute, when a red card put the Bears down a man. The Golden Eagles took advantage eight minutes later, as Colton Haskin played a ball to Baptiste Vandeputte, who knocked it in to cut the UCA lead to 2-1. ORU would find the equalizer just a minute and a half later; with Tyler Hill fielding a deflected pass from Alex Harris and putting it away from eight yards out. Brodacki got a solid look at a game-winner in the 87
th minute, but sent the shot wide.
Central Arkansas controlled possession for much of the first overtime period, limiting ORU to just one shot, while getting shots on goal from Brodacki and sophomores
Daltyn Knutson and
Christian Ilia, though the Bears were unable to find the net.
After freshman keeper
Marc Olsen made a save early in the second period, Brodacki found another dangerous chance, but Griffith was able to make the save. ORU would get the golden goal just minutes later, as the Golden Eagles took advantage of an injured UCA player in the 106
th minute, with Junior Chavez floating a shot just over the outstretched fingers of Olsen for the game-winner.
"The players put in everything tonight," said UCA head coach Ross Duncan. "They executed the game play and put us in a great spot to win on the road, and they worked hard for every ball. The red card changed the game though. It put us in a really tough position to try and close out the game from. But even a man down, we fought and we scrapped, even creating chances to win the game. I hate the result for our players. We are angry and upset. That will carry over to the weekend though, and we can use that heart; we can use the passion and fight that we showed tonight."
On the night, Brodacki led the Central Arkansas attack, putting four of his five shots on target, while Carson, Ilia, Knutson, and Sarzynski each put a single attempt on target. In goal, Olsen made a season-high 10 saves.
The Bears return to action on Saturday night at 7:00 PM, taking on MVC foe Missouri State in Springfield, Missouri.
